About the new Southwest Credit Card Rewards
New Southwest co-branded consumer credit card holders will earn a Southwest Companion Card and 30,000 bonus points when they spend $5,000 or more in the first three months since opening an account. To earn a bonus, you must open your account by March 14, 2022.
The Promotional Companion Card is valid until February 28, 2023, regardless of when you earn it. Usually, the card is valid until the end of the calendar year that you earn, plus the next calendar year.
However, it also usually requires you to earn 125,000 qualifying points or fly 100 qualifying one-way flights in a calendar year.
How companion cards work
The Southwest Companion Card is one of the most valuable benefits that a domestic airline offers. The card allows you to add a companion to any Southwest Airlines itinerary you’re flying on and only pay taxes and fees on that person’s ticket, starting at $5.60 for a one-way trip.
The Companion Card is very valuable because you can use it as many times as you like, book your own flight, then add a companion later from your online account. You can change your companion up to three times per year, which can be helpful if you’re not always with the same person. Just be aware that you can’t change your companion if you have any booking requests with your current companion attached.
For example, an April trip between Los Angeles and New York costs $268 plus a $67 fee for a return ticket. With the Companion Card, you only need to pay $67 for your companion’s flights. This card also works if you book a flight by points, which makes the 30,000-point reward extremely useful. Booking by points significantly reduces taxes and fees – the same trip from Los Angeles to New York will cost 22,219 points plus $11.20 in taxes and fees per passenger.
