The Southwest Rapid Rewards Card is a popular choice among travel enthusiasts not only because of their ability to earn and redeem rewards for Southwest flights, but also for their ability to earn rewards for the Southwest Companion Card. The Companion Card allows you to fly with traveling friends for only taxes and fees, usually starting at $5.60 for a one-way flight or $11.20 round trip. Typically, to win a card, you must accumulate 125,000 Quick Reward points or fly 100 eligible one-way flights in a calendar year.
However, occasionally Chase, the Southwest credit card issuer, offers a promotion that makes it easier to score a Companion Card. Sometimes the issuer will increase the welcome bonus or reduce the number of points required to earn it. The most recent promotion, which ended on March 14, 2022, makes it quite easy for you to earn cards. With it, you can get a Companion Card through February 28, 2023, plus 30,000 Quick Reward points, after spending $5,000 on a purchase on a qualifying Southwest credit card for the first three months.
Now that this promotion is over, we’ll cover other ways you can get the card quickly. But first, we’ll take a closer look at how the Companion Card works so you can make sure that this card is ideal for your travel needs.
How does the promotion offer for the Southwest Companion Card work?
The Southwest Companion Card allows you to bring a designated companion free of charge on any Southwest flight until its expiration. Then there are some other limitations to keep in mind, including the following:
You must pay for your flight in cash or points to book your companion’s flight.
Your companion must be placed on the same flight and free flight date.
You can change your designated companion up to three times during the Promotional Companion Card period.
If you cancel your ticket, your companion’s ticket will also be cancelled and if you do not make your flight, they will be charged the fare.
Note that these promotional cards are only available to you if you don’t have your current Southwest Rapid Rewards card and haven’t received a reward for a new card in the last 24 months. This does not apply to credit card products intended for Southwest entrepreneurs or employees.
How do you get a companion card faster?
While making 100 or more consecutive qualifying flights to receive your Companion Card may seem very exciting, there are other options if this isn’t ideal. Even without the Companion Card promotion, there are still plenty of creative ways to earn a Southwest Companion Card. Here are some tips on how you can make that money much faster:
Sign up for one or more Southwest cards at the same time
When there are no current promotions to help you get faster passes, this is a common way for those who eventually score passes. When you do this and meet the spending requirements, you can make real progress on accumulating enough points on demand of 125,000 points. Here are some Southwest credit cards to consider if you’re taking this route:
Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premium Credit Card
Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card
Southwest® Rapid Rewards® Performance Business Credit Card
Southwest® Rapid Rewards® Premium Corporate Credit Card
For some, you can get a Southwest business card and a consumer card, but for others, you can double down on business or consumer options. You can choose the right card combination for your needs and will help you make enough money for the Companion Card.
However, be aware that opening multiple Chase cards may not work if you’re against Chase’s 5/24 rule. This rule stipulates that if you have opened five credit cards in the past 24 months, you will not be eligible to open a new Chase credit card. While you need to follow the 5/24 rule to be eligible for a new business credit card from Chase, your new business card doesn’t count toward your future 5/24 status.
Earn bonus points quickly in other ways
While it’s easier to earn points using your card and make qualifying flights easier, there are other ways to score Quick Rewards points:
Book with Southwest airlines and eligible partners
Spend on shopping and dining partners, including eating Fast Rewards
Friend referral bonus up to 100,000 points (terms apply)
The bottom line
The Southwest Companion Card is usually a great deal for those who can meet the requirements. To be honest, it’s one of the most coveted travel credit card perks available. In the past, some creative cardholders have been able to use smart strategies to earn enough points needed for passing, but it takes some work. So, when there is a companion card promotion that makes scoring much easier, we think it is wise to act quickly and immediately embark on the transaction!
