The BC Care card is the former name of the card issued to Health Services Program participants in British Columbia. It is now known as the BC Service Card. If you have a photo card with driver’s license information, you can replace it at driver’s license centers. If not, replace the card through British Columbia Health Insurance. If you move to a new Province of Canada or abroad, you must apply for health insurance at your new place of residence.
Loss of MSP card
If you live in the province of British Columbia, Canada, you will typically apply to participate in the Health Services Program, or MSP, in that province for medical care. You will then receive the card from British Columbia Health Insurance or, if it is combined with your driver’s license, from the British Columbia Insurance Corporation, or ICBC, which handles the issuance of driver’s licenses and auto insurance.
Generally, you will want to keep this card, called the BC Services Card, in your wallet or bag or with you for identification and to prove that you are enrolled in a health insurance plan and, if you drive, that you are licensed to do so. If you lose it or it is damaged or stolen, you can ask to replace it.
If you are a licensed driver with a combined BC Service card and a license or photo ID card and you find your BC Service Card is lost, go to ICBC’s driver’s license office to request a new card. If you can’t go right away, you can still notify the lost or stolen card so officials know someone might be trying to use the card to impersonate you. You may have to pay a fee to replace your license or photo ID.
If it is not associated with a driver’s license and is not a photo ID, contact British Columbia Health Insurance to get a new card. There is usually no fee to replace a lost health card in BC if it is not a driver’s license or photo ID.
Driver’s License Revoked
If your driver’s license is revoked or suspended and your health insurance card is also your driver’s license, that does not automatically disqualify you from the BC health plan. Contact Health Insurance BC if you don’t have your official Health Insurance Number and go to a driver’s license center to get a new photo ID that reflects your current driving status.
Moving between jurisdictions
If you move out of British Columbia, you will likely need or want to get health insurance at your new place of residence. If you are moving to a new Canadian province, follow that province’s regulations to apply for a health insurance plan and get your new identification as well as any permits you need.
If you are moving abroad, take a look at the regulations at your new place of residence and apply for the appropriate public or private insurance and driver’s license if you drive. You may want to get temporary health insurance while waiting to qualify for a new permanent plan.
If you are moving to British Columbia, you will want to fill out the BC Service Card application to receive your card. You may need to get temporary private health insurance while waiting for the BC health plan to go into effect. You can apply for a health plan online or by mail, then go to ICBC’s driver’s license center to apply for a driver’s license or photo ID that will also have information about your health plan.
Incorrect information on the card
If your card has incorrect or outdated information about your name, gender, or date of birth, contact Health Insurance BC for help.
